Bushwick, Brooklyn #NewHood

We just moved in to a new neighborhood in Brooklyn – and so far really loving it. Everyone says Bushwick is “up & coming” which, (for those of you who don’t know) means it used to be very ghetto, has gotten much nicer, but still has a long way to go. I mildly agree but love the character and charm of this very diverse and artsy neighborhood.  The streets are spewed with massive pieces of graffiti art on buildings and garages. As I’m obsessed with taking photos of everything, The Bushwick Collective & other nearby pieces will occasionally make an appearance here or on my Snapchat @ashleybyrdy

Some of my favorite pieces around the neighborhood…

Wölffer Kitchen

Wölffer Estate Vineyard recently launched a luxurious extension of their brand, the Wölffer Kitchen – serving “modern American cuisine with a Mediterranean influence,” basically it’s very wine-friendly food. I love spending days and weekends in Sag Harbor – needless to say, we went back for the Rosé Sangria more than once. I’m actually obsessed with the Rosé Sangria – it is not sweet like most sangria’s, it’s super fresh & just amazing. 🌸👌 See our favorite bartender Michelle for some delicious & unique cocktails! Also highly recommend the Caesar Salad – I know, how boring right? WRONG! It’s different & delicious – the croutons are awesome parts of crunch yet not too hard, dressing is perfect, lettuce is fresh, crisp and buttery.

There is a beautiful mural painted on one of the walls, and the hostess stand is decorated in the beautiful pattern of the “Summer in a Bottle” varieties. There is outdoor seating available in the newly renovated space as well. Perfect for dining or to enjoy cocktails! Don’t worry – despite what they say, the rosé is not going to run out. But just in case – get here soon!

Another highly recommended location, well-done by Wölffer Estate!

Cabana Southampton

Strolling through Southampton last Monday, I came across an interesting and beautifully curated pop-up shop, Cabana Southampton. The “Come Sale Away” sign drew me in….

A Peek Inside Cabana Southampton

Store owner Julie Heller explained that the store is inspired by vintage pieces. There are vintage books, gorgeous artwork, vintage Chanel handbags & jewelry, candles and stationary that are creatively detailed.

Based in NYC as ERA|LUXE, a cult-fave luxury vintage store, Heller decided to bring the shop to where she summer’s in Southampton, NY. The vintage does so well that she wanted to bring in new products from different designer brands that weren’t well represented on the east end of Long Island/Hampton’s.

Everything inside makes everyone that enters want to purchase something – I guarantee there is at least one piece in this store that will “speak to you.” There are TONS of awesome gifts in this shop – things that you’d “never buy for yourself” but you actually will because that’s how fab it is.

The Cabana Southampton Instagram is loaded with beautifully curated photos of products sold in the shop and gorgeous Hampton’s beachfront views – what’s not to love / “like”? The ever popular HASHTAG HAMPTONS gear is placed around the store between books, scented candles & sprays, accessories and perfectly placed artwork/paintings.

They’re staying open until mid-September so I suggest checking it out if you’re on the east end for any of the remaining weeks of summer! There’s an online shop for Cabana Southampton as well so if your weekends are already full of day trips & cocktails for the remainder of the summer, you can still check out all the goods.

Setting our Intentions for the Weekend!
Setting our Intentions for the Weekend! (Yeah BRO!)

Festival season, anyone? OMG I’m sure you’ve heard about every freakin’ festival out there by now, right? TBH you’re probably saying to yourself – coooooool. DILLIGAF? Nope. This one’s different though – although it’s a music festival, it’s more of a health and wellness festival. So chic. Wanderlust was perfect!!! For those unfamiliar, it’s a glorious 4-day event celebrating community & mindful living. It’s about practicing yoga, being outdoors, eating well, spiritual meditation & relaxation, being green, strengthening, hiking, learning, creating awareness and being surrounded by some of the greatest people on the planet. Also some awesome musicians and a LOT of celebrating life. Overall an amazing event created by Lululemon and attended by thousands from all over the world.

The D’om Lit Up Upon Arrival for Us on Friday Night
Even made friends - shocking!
Even made friends – I’m getting so much better at this whole “people” thing!

There are various types of yoga classes or meditation seminars or hikes to sign up for. There’s literally something for everybody. Two of my college roomies / BFF’s and I went to Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont and had an epic and hysterical adventure. I say hysterical because the lodge we stayed in was “as nice as” many of the European hostiles I stayed in while traveling abroad in college. RATCHET.

Saturday we took 3 fantastic yoga classes with fab instructors from all over the world (2 from Washington DC!). My favorite class was called Yogarina (yoga/ballet fusion) taught by Beau Campbell with a live violinist Haana playing and singing 100% improv which was rad!!

MC Yogi‘s classes were sold out – seriously uplifting and a lot of fun. He makes yoga really relevant, exciting and fresh. He played some old school r&b, reggae and hip hop during class – along with some of his personal rhymes. Meaningful share session and he definitely makes traditional vinyasa yoga a ton of fun.

One of my favorite things by far was this DJ spinning inside of the Lululemon D’Om treehouse all day long.

Tons of booths with free samples of really amazing products. Stocked up on Quest Bars (fave!) Lots of vendors with great sustainable, eco-friendly and straight up cool products to buy. Surrendered old sunscreen to purchase new, amazing, chemical-free sunblock from Goddess Garden. Check them out – amazing. Really awesome gear from Folk Rebellion – highly recommend checking them out. I obviously spent way too much money on things like that of course…

ART

Kaitlin got to meet one of her favorite artists, Trevor Hall (kind of a reggae / rock mix). He’s actually the reason why this trip even happened for us. So that was amazing and happy!

I’ll speak for all the betches saying that we enjoyed this festival a whole lot and cannot wait to go back again next year!!

Billyburg to Soho

It’s Monday morning – I’m up! I’m up early actually, showered, getting ready to go. I’m on time, this is refreshing!

Until I look at the time and oh, okay. I’m running late now. I missed the bus I planned on taking – so – UGH my heels are so high – by the time I walk to the subway – I’ll want to cry. OK, next idea. Jump in my car – drive to the subway. No way can I drive into Manhattan (nowhere to park).

Parallel parking time! 🙂 Hit the car parked behind me – love tap really…. whatever it’s fine.  A beep – Fuck. there is somebody in the car. Caught. Hopefully it’s not bad. It’s not. I apologize and run away down the stairs to, “the next L train its now arriving on the…Manhattan bound track.”

Great… run! Swipe MetroCard – “Insufficient Fare.” Ugh – Monday – long lines of course. Add myself to the shortest line. This line is short because the machine isn’t working, obviously. Next line – my credit card can not be read. Would I like to try again? Sure. My debit card, my other credit card, my Amex, my boss’ credit card. None of these can be read. It’s not the cards of course, it’s the machine. Again? Really? That other person’s card worked on it though.

The 2nd Manhattan-bound L train is now departing. Beep. Beep. Beep. As people keep filing through the turnstile and loading into the cramped L train. I get off the Metrocard line. I have no cash because I spent it all at the cash only restaurant I got a really great burger at yesterday. Great. Start to have a mild panic attack as the train pulls out of the station. Then I remember I have approximately 2 lbs. of change a the bottom of my handbag. Back to the MetroCard refill line, one more time. Another L train approaches. Somehow the line goes quickly. I grab my ticket and run through the turnstile. Get on the train. Crammed in. Happy I made it but so unhappy at the same time.

Smelly armpit man puts it right in my face as he grabs on to the bar right above my head. I am being touched in various places I do not wish to be touched in. I’m not pleased. I’m counting down the seconds until I get to Union Square to break free from this prison into the insanity that is exiting L train to catch the next connecting train.

Hopefully my dress isn’t too short so people behind me can’t see my ass as I walk up the stairs. Hopefully they won’t look. But they will look. I would look.

OK, thank god that’s over with.

Walking over to the next train, pass the screaming Jesus lady at Union Square. Right on schedule. She’s screaming at all of us, but nobody in particular about following the lord. I wonder if anyone follows her advice, talks to her or tells her to pipe down?

OK, next train. It’s on time thank god and I’m not waiting at all for it. There’s a really cute guy in this subway. And a really pretty 20 something female with gorgeous red lipstick and a weird haircut that I’m starting to vibe with. Finally get to my stop and stand in line to exit the subway to the street. And a blast of steaming air blows into my face. Ugh – the steam… ew. OK – hey Happy Monday. First day of a short week. And it’s just gonna be a great one, I can feel it.

What’s In My Bag? | Aruba 2015

What’s in my bag blogs always interest me, so I’m sharing some details. Life Looks Better In Black gives a glimpse into some overall big picture thoughts and opinions. As if I don’t share enough, now you can OD! Enjoy or don’t! Xx

Bag: Mansur Gavriel Tote Black & Blue

IMG_5278-0

LV Passport Case: essentials, duh.
9ft iPhone Charger: because when traveling, and especially in life — that regular length cord just does not cut it!
Snaaaaacks: betches get hungry, the bar I had in my pantry was Nature Valley Peanut Butter something, ehhhh.
Reading Material: How To Be Parisian Wherever You Are – I’ve read it before, great book so I’ll read it again. I learn new things every time I pick it up and it feeds my Parisian addiction.
LV Card Case: no need for a wallet on vacation. Store ID, credit cards, insurance cards, and cash. All the necessities without the extra weight!
Meds: vitamins and prescriptions, necessities you know.
Headphones: downloaded the Rosetta Stone app on my phone so I can take my French language course on the go! Great for when you’re bored in the airport. Also feeding aforementioned Parisian addiction.
Evian Facial Spray: miracle worker for flights, keeps you feeling refreshed!
Sunglasses: I usually travel with 2 pairs because of the sheer fact that I’ll likely lose a pair in the ocean. Or both. Yikes! Celine’s and Tom Ford this time, wish me luck. 😉
Moleskine Journal: I write a lot. I always have something that I want to remember but will likely forget. Also has a hardcopy calendar. I keep my Le Pen with it because I love the way it writes and you never know when you’ll need a well writing black pen.
LV Makeup Bag: great for storing all makeup and beauty products. Also doubles as a clutch for a dinner/night out at your destination.

Contents: all my fave products!
Le Miuix Hydrating Face Moisturizer, Byredo Gypsy Water, rms beauty oil, Lucas Papaw Ointment, Aruba Aloe, Chanel Sublimage La Creme Yeux, the lip slip by sara happ, Avène Cold Cream lip balm, MAKE eye makeup remover, Crest 3D White toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner (samples).

Makeup: Chanel and NARS everything! (More to follow…).

If you really know me, you’re likely shocked to see I’m moderately organized and not causing a scene at the airport. I’m extremely relieved to escape the frigid temps and icy, slushy, wet sidewalks of NYC. #OneHappyIsland here I come!

Xx

P.S. Wrote this while on Wifi from the air, so there’s no links to products. If you have a question, ask me! 😘

January 2nd.

2014 was a year of major change for me. Physically, emotionally, locally, globally – all changes. Changed my job field and location. Changed my residence (more times than I’d like to admit — ok, fine – 4!). My family changed, I lost my dad. Changed my relationship status (again, more times than I’d like to admit, but actually won’t admit). I’ve embraced a lot of change and I’m a firm believer in working toward the life you want. Dream chasing is a great way to do that, short term goal setting is a productive way to do that. There’s always a positive vibe in change, although maybe not right away. It comes. Time heals. Time takes time. Keep it in today.

Can’t wait for whatever changes may come this year. I’m not setting resolutions, I’m continuing to goal set and slowly move toward whatever I want and whatever comes my way. Looking forward to some stability in 2015. There’s no rules in 2015… so start your change or your stability whenever you see fit. ❤ Keep it on lock.

*I never learned French though, it’s on my goal list for this year. Already have the Rosetta Stone.
